Jane's USAF1999Simulation
There are eight USAF aircraft to chose from and they cover the jet era from Korea to the modern day. As such you can't expect the precision of simulation found in a game that concentrates on just one aircraft but there is enough of a difference in cockpit appearance and perceived flight handling that you certainly feel as if you are flying different aircraft. The manual is a good, beefy example of what a manual should be and gives details on all of the aircraft. Each plane has information on the overall program, the variants and details on equipment, armament...

Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowling1998Sports
Circuit Pro Bowling is your basic bowling simulation with a few nice extras. For instance, you can create your own professional bowler or pick from one of several genuine pro bowlers included in the game. THQ has included video player bios so you can learn a bit about each before playing as or against them. However, these bios are really just about talking smack, like when Ricky Ward tells you, 'Guys with lots of titles don't scare me, I eat them for lunch.' There are six types of gameplay (including exhibition, skins, and tournament) as well as a multiplayer mode....

Chess Maniac 5 Billion and One1993Strategy
National Lampoon's Chess Maniac 5 Billion and 1 is a parody of the award winning Chessmaster series. Although a parody, the game honors the traditional form of chess in terms of movement and strategy while the humor comes from background sources. Examples include advice received when you ask the computer for help, animation of the pieces or simply sound effects generated when a pawn or piece is captured. The game features two specific cultures as opposing forces -- Persian and Medieval. Adding to the festivities are various piece sets available for use such as, from the Persian perspective, the Sultan,...

Heroes of the Lance1989Arcade action
Set in the Dragonlance world of Krynn, Heroes of the Lance has you guiding a party of eight adventurers in a quest to find the Disks of Mishakal deep within the underground ruins of Xak Tsaroth. Instead of controlling the entire party's actions at once, you guide one character at a time across a side-scrolling dungeon. The order of heroes, identified by portraits on the bottom half of the screen, determines which party member you control at any given time. Pausing the game allows you to rearrange characters and perform certain actions, such as casting spells or using items. If...

Cube 2: Sauerbraten2004Arcade action
While it's difficult to screw up the classic FPS gaming mechanics that have become a staple among gamers, Sauerbraten manages to exceed stupendously at stomping on any hint of a redeeming quality that may convince us to ever to play it again. We'll focus on gameplay first. Perhaps the most dominant mistake in Sauerbraten is its ridiculously fast tempo. Players run at extreme speeds, and while this may at first seem like a way to intensify the action, it quickly becomes apparent that any attempt at aiming is fruitless. SoupHat mentioned that anyone with the idea of adding a Speed Bonus...

Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales2005Role playing
It's hard to avoid comparison between Age of Pirates and Sid Meier's hit game Pirates!. Both are open-ended games where you'll step into the buckled shoes of a swashbuckling pirate, outfitting a ship (or fleet of ships) to terrorize the Caribbean at will -- either as an outright pirate or as a Privateer for various nations with their own shifting allegiances. But whereas Pirates! is a quick-playing arcade-style game with over-the-top action and not a whole lot of depth, Age of Pirates aims to present a deeper experience with more elements of simulation and role-playing. The 'deeper' concept sounds like gaming...

Elite Plus1991Simulation
Elite Plus is a VGA re-make of Bell and Braben's space trading flight simulator, Elite. It is an updated conversion of the original that features new graphics and sounds/music. The novella included with this package is different from the one that came with the original Elite releases. This version includes the story 'Imprint' by Andy Redman, which formed the latter part of the manual, while the original Elite included The Dark Wheel by Robert Holdstock as a separate book. ...

Baryon1995Arcade action
Baryon is a straightforward vertical shooter which features a smooth graphical engine, a short digital sound track and various types of enemies. There are two types of ships, each with its own weapon types, as well as missile upgrades (homing as well as regular, more powerful ones), bombs and shield. The shareware version of Baryon features only one level, but the registered version promises more action-packed levels with more enemy types. ...

Powerslave (a.k.a. Exhumed)1996Arcade action
Powerslave is a fun and innovative first-person shooter whose excellent graphics and level design are unfortunately overshadowed by serious interface problems and bugs (which are probably related to the fact that the game was converted to PC from the original PlayStation version). The premise is quite promising, and is a far cry from 'shoot aliens, save Earth' plots of most first-person shooters. You play a covert operations specialist who's been ferried into the Egyptian city of Karnak to find out who or what has sealed off the town from the rest of the world. The only information you have is...
